The Good Life

Who loves short weeks?! We hope your child enjoys a nice three day weekend! Today sure did seem like a Friday! Our classes love Fridays; they are full of painting, crafting, and many other fun activities!

The focus letters this week were "Dd" and "Ii", keep scrolling to see what we have been up to.

D is for.... Dinosaurs!

What better way to celebrate "Ii" than eating ICE CREAM!?! Miss DeWitt's kiddos enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of painting and snacking on some delicious ice cream!

During our Math block, we have been working hard on creating and extending patterns with colors, sizes, shapes, etc. As a fun culminating activity, we used Fruit Loops to sort and make patterns. These kids are pattern masters!

ARRRRRRghh Matey!

Have you been hearing the phrase "hunk and chunk" around your house lately? Hunk and Chunks is a strategy we use to sound out words. These "chunks" in words make specific sounds that do not follow standard letter sounds. We focus on one specific chunk each week. So far, we have covered: SH, CH, OO, EE, TH, and AR. These sound patterns can come at the beginning of a word, middle, or the end.

Examples:
Sh- sheep, wish
Ch- chicken, sandwich
Th- that, the, with
Ee- bee, tree
Oo- school, zoo
Ar- smart, arm, star

This week, our Hunk and Chunk was "ar", as in the sound a pirate on the high sea makes! What better way to learn about -AR than to become a pirate?! That's exactly what we did this past Friday! The students all received their own pirate name, went on a treasure hunt, created an art project, read pirate stories, and even sang some silly pirate songs!

Sight Word Fun!

Oh, those tricky sight words! Majority of these words do not follow common sound patterns; therefore, they have to be memorized. They are the most frequently used and repeated words in the English language.

We do MANY activities to help us learn our sight words. We sing songs about them, manipulate play doh to spell our words, play flash card games, and much more. Learning sure is fun in Kindergarten!

Last week, we decided to get a little messy with our new words...
